Abstract

The defence of animal rights in the theories of justice is a controversial and hard-fitting question. The present work approaches this matter within John Rawls´ A theory of justice and demonstrates how a reinterpretation of its main elements can provide justice to animals without distorting its original content. To do so, an analysis of various elements of the Rawlsian theory like the concept of moral personhood, the original position and the veil of ignorance, uncertainty aversion and the maximin rule is carried out. Ultimately, it is considered that the parties in the original position will agree on the right to live as the fundamental principle of justice.
